Benjamin Zephaniah remembered by Liverpool poet

A Liverpool poet paid tribute to his friend writer and activist Professor Benjamin Zephaniah after he died aged 65. Levi Tafari first met Benjamin in about 1981 when he was doing a performance at the University of Liverpool. Levi kept in touch and Benjamin even attended his wedding.

Benjamin said in a social media post prior to performing in Liverpool in November 2019: “Liverpool is a great city which I’ve always enjoyed playing”. His first real public performance was as a 10-year-old in church and by the age of 15 he had a strong following in Handsworth, Birmingham.

Levi told the ECHO: “He was a warm, caring, considerate and conscious man that gave his time generously for causes he believed in. He was forward thinking in terms of embracing and fighting against injustice, racism, misogyny, inequality [and other issues].
