‘Who we are and where we’re coming from’

(Developed and managed by Benjamin’s family)

The Benjamin Zephaniah Family Legacy Group was founded by Benjamin’s siblings in January 2024.

The BZFL Group is an Unincorporated Association supported by The National Mikey Powell Memorial Family Fund and news/campaign group 4WardEverUK.

Benjamin’s siblings are Velda White (twin sister), Millicent Springer, Joyce Springer-Amadedon, Tippa Naphtali, Mark Springer, Paul Springer and David Springer. Other extended family members will be involved at various stages of delivery and management of the association.

Following Benjamin’s tragic death on 7 December 2023, family spokesperson Tippa said:

“To the world Benjamin was the renowned writer, poet, human rights activist, actor and outspoken critic of the state, social injustice and more’. But to us, his family, he was also all of these things, but most important of all he was simply a son, brother, uncle or cousin – and we will miss him deeply.“

The family were determined that in their own way, they wanted to do their bit to ensure that Benjamin’s legacy will always be celebrated and recognised, and to work with various parties to co-organise a series of national and international events and projects towards this aim.

Benjamin’s sister Joyce said; “it’s a privilege to be part of our family’s joined-up effort to remember and celebrate our amazing Benjamin and to act as a sounding board and reference point for others who wish to do the same”

Several members of Benjamin’s family have a long history of providing community and faith-based services to support some of the most vulnerable people in society. Like Benjamin, we are shaped by our shared lived experience and are passionate about many of the things Benjamin stood for and spoke out about. ‘It runs in the family it would seem.’
