From seemingly vanished Medieval abbeys to the rise of Grime, June marks Newham Heritage Month 2024, celebrating the theme, ‘Places and Spaces’, exploring more than 900 years of the borough’s heritage.
Over 75 free events will celebrate the fascinating places and spaces that built Newham’s heritage, from ancient mills to world-famous skate spots, via Cathedrals of Sewage, activist sites and underground radio stations.
This week saw a special plaque mounted at the historic Newham Black Performing and Visual Arts Workshop, the ground-breaking venue was the launchpad for young Black artists including the much loved Benjamin Zephaniah, who sadly passed away late last year.
A number of people in attendance at the event spoke glowinging of Benjamin, not least his brother, who, addressing the gathering, said: “My name is Tippa, and Benjamin I’m very proud to say, was my brother. Not just my street brother, my mummy brother and daddy brother.
“As you all know, we lost Benjamin in December in the physical form; we will never lose that man, the legacy he has left is enormous.”
